“More than 50 percent of car buyers in the UAE would have decided what to buy and the specs they want by searching online,” said Amin Kadrie, Chairman of the auto consultancy Skelmore and regional affiliate of the influential J.D. Power research firm.
“They would have chosen one or two vehicles before they even walk into a showroom. A year ago the number of UAE car buyers who did it this way was 40 percent. We expect by 2020, 75-80 percent would have made all their decisions online.”
Gen Z, categorized as those born after 1998, are the next big buying group who have grown to command buying power. With the new consumer influx, Gen Z are characterized as almost always on-line raising the question of, how dealerships will adapt to the shift of retailers spending the majority of their time researching digitally?
According to studies by Al Shaya Group, E-commerce spends in the UAE is currently estimated to be US$16 Billion. The typical UAE shopper spends US$1,648 on e-commerce shopping annually with a projected CAGR of 29.6% until 2022. The proportion of e-commerce spend as a percentage of total retail in the UAE is only 3% (compared with 10% on the global level).
The region is projected to grow at a CAGR of 24.6% until 2022, which is faster than any other region in the world. E-commerce spends in the UAE is estimated to reach US$16 billion in 2019. It will grow at a CAGR of 23% between 2019 and 2022.
With consumer trends aligning in different retailing products, it’s clear that the modern customer expects the best technology when buying on-line. Millennials have been seen to have an average attention span which is only 12 seconds long, but Gen Z has an even shorter 8-second attention span, meaning brands must ensure they are using the latest and seamless technology to capture Gen Z’s attention.
